The year's Top 10 Mac stories
Stories are ranked 10 to one in ascending order of importance, based on a number of factors including the overall impact on the Mac market and Mac users as well as the potential to influence events deep into the coming year. The 10 entries were selected by a panel of me, following a lengthy debate between me and the voices in my head. This is one man’s opinion, in other words—if you think that I overlooked, overemphasized, or overrated a Mac-related happening, feel free to let me know about it in the comments.
OS shoot-out: Windows vs. Mac OS X vs. Linux
The Mac's been on a roll, both due to its highly regarded Mac OS X Leopard operating system and to an unhappy reception for Microsoft's Windows Vista. The result: For the first time in memory, the Mac's market share has hit 9.1 percent, according to IDC data, and Windows' market share has dipped below 90 percent.
Do you need antivirus software?
Last week, in my Norton AntiVirus Begone! entry, I offered instructions for removing Norton AntiVirus from a Mac. That entry appeared in this week's Macworld Weekly Newsletter and prompted a slew of messages along these lines: When I purchased my Mac I was told getting a virus on a Mac is unlikely and that I did not need protection. What do you recommend?
Apple removes antivirus support page
On Tuesday Apple removed a support page from its Web site that recommended users purchase antivirus software for their Macs, saying that the page was old and inaccurate.
